Consumers should be aware that captive bead rings 10 gauge and larger require special tools to close the rings. Ring opening pliers are not available at your local home improvement center.  You can however order them online.  Choose the size appropriate for the captive bead rings you will be working with.  Due to the pressure required it is recommended that you have someone to help you with the rings if you are attempting to change large gauge rings without the assistance of a professional body piercer.

Spring loaded captive bead rings are another option when you start getting into large gauge jewelry.  These pieces work under the same principal as traditional captive bead rings but instead have a spring loaded bead that gives when inserting and removing.  The spring loaded bead eliminates the need for expensive ring closing pliers.
