Pointed Elf Ears Cosmetic Surgery – Myth Or Real?

April 2nd, 2009 · 48 Comments

Elf Ears Cosmetic surgeryCould you imagine having permanent pointy ears just like an elf?  You’re in luck.  Advancements in cosmetic surgery have made it possible for you yourself to have some cute pointed ears.  The process isn’t the most pleasant body modification available and still considered rather extreme.

Who Is Performing This Body Modification?

There are numerous claims on the internet by noted cosmetic surgeons, most notably the claims by Dr. Lajos Nagy who claims that pointed ears aren’t just for cosmetic reasons but will also help your hearing.

Here’s an excerpt from Dr. Nagy’s website.

Why are pointed ears more sensitive?

One of its reasons is rather simple: pointed ears focus sounds in a better way, which, in the case of animals, is supplemented by the fact that they can orientate themselves towards the source of sounds without turning their heads, by moving only their ears.

The other reason is the own frequency of the pinnae, as being solid objects themselves, which changes together with their shape. Pointed ears resonate with sounds at the frequency of around 8 kHz, thus they amplify sharp sounds instead of the intermediate frequencies. This is the reason why, amongst other things, dogs are sensitive to ultrasonic sounds, which are imperceptible for human ears.

Although turning the pinnae still remains impossible for human beings according to its anatomic features, the advantages of pointed ears can be enjoyed once again with the help of a simple, routine operation.

Be the next to sharpen your hearing!

Now, there have been absolutely no scientific studies that prove pointed ears improve hearing.  Dr. Nagy has also received plenty of negative press as all his before and after photos of this procedure are obviously photoshopped, which can be seen in the picture above.  Notice that the hair styles in both the before and after are identical, including the miscelanious hairs slighly out of place.  I personally don’t believe Dr. Nagy has ever performed any pointed ears cosmetic surgrey.

Not All Elf Ears Are A Hoax

Elf Ears Body ModificationSeveral real  body modification professionals do actually perform this modification, including Russ Foxx from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Here you can see that Russ Foxx actually offers pictures of each stage of the healing process proving that Elf Ears are an entirely possible body modification. There are several other qualified body modification professionals providing this body modification throughout the world.

Is The Process Reversible?

Sadly, this is a one and done procedure. Once you modify your ears and remove the excess tissue there is no way to repair your now pointy ears without extensive plastic surgery, which will no doubt cost many folds more then the original process cost.

This is a great blog, thank you! I was looking for cosmetic surgeons recently and ran into your article on elf ears. How cute is that? I secretly want them now but I’m quite sure I’ll never have the money or the courage to get this done myself.

I have a question. What will cost you when you have done this? Life span or something like that? Please send me a mail and let me understand.

  • 3 Kazador // May 18, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I think it’s kind of insane that people actually want pointed ears! I was born with pointed (elf) ears, but i guess to each his/her own

  • 4 amy // Jun 7, 2009 at 12:48 pm

    i want the ears.

  • 5 Nikk // Aug 10, 2009 at 10:56 pm

I freaking love pointed/Elf ears. I don’t see why people think this is so extreme. I’m one of those people who like adding small, not very noticable, body mods. And these are perfect. They represent my inner dork. :)

  • 6 dave // Sep 26, 2009 at 6:53 am

Kazador you probably got a lot of grief about the ears in school but adults are a lot less likely to get grief for it and also somewhat less likely to care if they did.

They are very cool. If I didn’t look like such a man beast I’d get them myself, but I don’t think they would go with the rest of me. Very cute for girls or even prettier men.

  • 7 Chloe // Nov 16, 2009 at 11:50 am

your all wierdo fuckers .. their not sexy or cute! They look like sumthin off star treck haha geeky as fuck mate .. But id like you to have them done cos if it wernt 4 people like you us normal people wouldnt have any thing 2 laff at and shout abuse at!

  • 9 Felivi // Nov 29, 2009 at 1:51 pm

Haha, what’s stuck up Choe’s *ss? Regardless, I really want pointy ears, I could be an elf one day, and Vulcan the next. :D Life would be great. :)

  • 10 Maria // Dec 6, 2009 at 11:08 am

I agree with Chloe… there is something totally fucked up about this. I’m getting a really great laugh out of it though. I would never do this to myself… there isn’t enough money in the world, seriously. “Body Mods” are for the insecure and the attention hungry… Elf ears? Really?

  • 11 jsab // Dec 8, 2009 at 7:22 pm

    what this cost?

  • 12 J // Dec 16, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Personally something like this is something I have been seeking to do for many years. However I hate the results from the way the body modificationists do it. I would easily pay a few thousand to a plastic surgeon who can do it well and do it the way I want. If anyone knows the name of a real one who can I would appreciate the information.

  • 13 Em // Dec 20, 2009 at 1:01 am

Mundanes who become sick to their stomach at things like Vulcan ears must be insecure. If it’s not your aesthetic, it’s not your aesthetic.

There are a multitude of reasons someone would want a mod, so to say that one has to be attention hungry or insecure is a gross misrepresentation.

    I personally think they’re beautiful.

  • 14 Kimmy // Dec 21, 2009 at 2:49 am

I had a lot of piercing and a huge tattoo done during my teens and has now removed majority of my piercings, but is stuck with my huge tattoo on my back.
Body modication such as this one(elf ears) is definitely a very risky investment as trend changes thru time. It may be cool now, but might look horrible in near future, a good example is all the studs and rings I had on the top of my ears has been removed, were incredibly hip in the 90s, but the look is so dated now.

  • 15 Meme // Dec 24, 2009 at 4:01 pm

That look gross and not to mention ridiculous, but to each his own I guess…

  • 16 Q // Jan 24, 2010 at 8:41 pm

yep, Chloe sounds like a dumb bitch, a rude, no class asshole. What a dumb twat. Fuck you too Maria. It’s these types of people who aren’t evovled enough to accept that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. primitive screwheads.

  • 17 acid amy // Feb 7, 2010 at 6:25 pm

i’ve never ever wanted cosmetic surgery, i’m still really against ‘boob jobs’ or rhino plastics, they’re just really sad, people really think they need to do that….but this is awesome, fantasy cosmetic surgery isn’t just because you want to look like a media/ sexism consumer, capitalist and functionalist funding whore. no, it’s unlike the pointless obsessions with how you look to other people and feeling bad because you think you look bad, get depressed about it and feel unnaturally uncomfortable going out without make up on. because that really is pathetic. in my onion just wear clothes that are fun, maybe they’re bright or in a fantasy theme. this surgery just takes fantasy fun a step further and in my eyes there’s nothing wrong with that. so if you like vampires, sharpen your teeth, if you like the elfish look, point your ears, but don’t just want a boob job because all the tacky girls in the mass media have big boobs that’s just plain sad, think for your self, what do you like? This surgery doesn’t fund sexism or those who promote it in the mass media. It doesn’t fuel wanting to look like everybody else, how could it?! it’s really just for fun :)

  • 18 acid amy // Feb 7, 2010 at 6:36 pm

way to represent your argument Chloe haha i suppose you don’t need surgery when you’ve got such a lovely Burberry cap. seriously people like you with your swearing and pointless number homophones are the only ‘wierdo fuckers’ here. sorry to say my dear ho (see i can use your language too ><). sorry for taking your time, you can go back to standing outside a shop and asking people to get you cigarettes now. :)

  • 19 Martha // Mar 19, 2010 at 3:15 am

Aha! It can be done. This is something I would die to have. It expresses my inner geek and hippy at the same time. Also, it’s subtle enough that it shouldn’t screw up my career. Please people (this means you Chloe, Maria, and Meme), if this isn’t your thing then continue on you merry way and don’t try to piss off body mod enthusiasts by insulting their choices and questioning their mental state; it’s not going to get you anywhere and is completely untrue. Anyway, this is a gorgeous piece of body art and I’m definitely going to get this done at some point.

  • 20 ZIK // May 3, 2010 at 6:01 am

Are these people sick or what? What is your problem. This is not normal. Please do
    NOT do this.

most women want there breasts done bigger …I want my ear pointed dammit!

  • 22 Karri // May 10, 2010 at 8:15 am

ears!! i meant…one just one ..oops

  • 23 Maya ^^ // May 29, 2010 at 11:08 am

I have ALWYAS wanted my ears pointed. To me, the body is a blank canvas, to decorate it is to fill that canvas and express who you are. Body modifications are risky, but some of the truly look beautiful — they fill that canvas. If some people don’t like them then thats their oppinion, it’s like a painting — not everyone will see the painting in the same way. What truly matters is that you like it, and you’re happy with what you’ve had done ^^

  • 24 Kym Skelton // Feb 7, 2011 at 10:34 pm

This is something i am 100% intent on doing. I have researched the surgery, spoken to cosmetic surgeons and though about it for a long time.

I am a fairy/childrens entertainer by trade. I own my own business, have several staff and consider my self sucessful. I do up to 15 fairy parties a weekend.

On the practical side, have you honestly tried latex stick on ears? To me, this surgery would extend my character from being a tacky dressed up performer, into “oh my goodness mummy, she must be real.. look at her ears!” I am also satisfied that when i am much older, they will be a nice momento of a very important part of my life. Imagine telling your grandkids that when you were young you met a fairy and she ave you magic fairy ears.

To suggest they are attention seeking, disgusting or otherwise repulsive is simply your own uninformed opinion.

I find these more subtle that tattoos, piercings etc. I doubt you would even notice upon first glance. I think as long as your face shape suits them (heart shaped or similar) and you get them done well, they are very attractive.

To be done at a cosmetic surgery clinic i have been quoted around $5000 in NZD, i dont know what that is US sorry. However im sure that there will be a body mod clinic able to do them for much cheaper.

My only advice is think about it. Consider why you want them, consider whether you will like them long term. And if your reasons are solid then go for it!

    Kym.

I have wanted this for years but I am in Indiana and have only found Russ Foxx in Canada and hell do it for around $600. If anyone knows of a place closer to me for similar price or lower please let me know. kazul889@yahoo.com thanks

  • 26 DrOobi // Mar 1, 2011 at 6:17 pm

I’m a guy and i’d get my ears pointed. It’s on my to do list including microdermals down my spine, getting my tongue split and making my mum throw up in horror and what she gave birth to. :)

  • 27 Emily // Mar 3, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I have wanted to do this for soooo long. I had no idea it really existed. I was actually going to go to a plastic surgeon and ask for it. All of my friends call me fairy/elf because I am short small and “magical” and I have an UNDYING love for fantasy and beauty. This is A MUST. I cannot WAIT AHHH!! How much does this cost by the way? In the United States?

  • 28 Lyae // Mar 11, 2011 at 12:54 am

Having researched this, I am pretty much sure that I want to have this done. It’s small and barely noticeable. I don’t want it for attention or beauty but as a representation of what I really love. For years and years I have been in love with fantasy; reading works from authors such as Mercedes Lackey, Joanna Bertin, David Eddings and playing games/watching movies such as Dragon Age, Lord of the Rings, and Fire Emblem. While there is a personal love for the ears they are also beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and keeping an open mind is essential for peace.

  • 29 Gandalf // Mar 19, 2011 at 7:07 pm

    Its unneccesary.
I sure you will reborn in Middle Earth in your next life, and who knows? Maybe you will be the next elven princess…

  • 30 Gandalf // Mar 19, 2011 at 8:36 pm

Anyway why everyone want to pump more money for the surgery pros? I think those who are really needs some modifications are pretty enought…

  • 31 Lydia // Mar 19, 2011 at 11:32 pm

I am going to get this done by the man that pretty much invented the procedure, and does the best job of it imho. They do not turn out goblin-like, which ive seen from some other artists.

Feel free to ask them any questions, they are a GREAT help! They are located in Arizona.

  • 32 Lydia // Mar 19, 2011 at 11:34 pm

Also, Steve only charges $500, which seems pretty darn fair to me.

  • 33 kaydie // Apr 11, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Im in love with these ears. I grew up loving fantasy, and I always believed it was gorgeous, and it expresses the inner, quirky me. To be told that I’m doing it for attention is to be asking for attention for yourself, because I don’t care what you think. This change will be for me, and me alone; not you and your close-minded opinions. So say what you will about people who like them, but I know for a fact that you really need to understand that things are not about what society believes in; its about what the individual believes in.
If you like them, are willing to get them, and have the money, then go for it. If you dont like them, leave the people who do alone. its their business, so mind your own.

  • 34 liz // Apr 12, 2011 at 2:29 pm

ok this is just stuipid i love fantisy and elfs but honestly i need to agree with ZIK (another comment)

  • 35 Anabriel // Apr 14, 2011 at 1:26 pm

The only thing I would say there is to worry about if you choose to do something like this is whether this is going to be a lasting thing or is this just a flash in the pan kind of trend? Think about how many style bandwagons people jumped on while they were popular, and within a short amount of time, looked back on it and thought, “What was I thinking!?” And for something more permanent than even a tattoo, that’s a huge risk that it’s rarely practical to take.

But an even bigger thing I think of is how, I know in my line of work, I have to travel to other countries at least once a year, and what I have to keep in mind is that the image I’m projecting to people in non-Western cultures. In some cultures I’ve encountered, such as the Mayans in the villages of the Petén jungle of northern Guatemala, there is a very negative stigma attached to body mods, and they associate them with negativity and rebellious lifestyles, and they tend to see people with body mods as people they need to stay away from or be afraid of. In fact, one man I worked with in Guatemala has what I think is a very beautiful tribal tattoo that covers his entire right shoulder meant to symbolize his love for God and for his family, and I had my ears pierced 7 times when I was a teenager, and now I only wear small cz studs in each piercing… yet children in most of the villages we worked with saw that man’s tattoo and were immediately afraid of him, and they saw my earrings and said, “Eeewww!!” So as long as I intend to stay in this line of work, if I want it to go smoothly, I can’t do body mods out of respect for the other cultures I visit.

So for that reason, I really think that, before people do something like this, they need to stop and think about the practicality of it… how is something so permanent going to effect what you want to do with the rest of your life? And even though you’re feeling good about it now, are you putting a roadblock in front of something in the future that’s gonna cause a lot of grief later?

    i want my boobs bigger.

  • 37 daniel // May 5, 2011 at 3:35 am

i have a small willy exactly the same as joe hancock supposable his willys small but how much would it cost to enlarge my little willy

  • 38 Milla // May 14, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Dorry Daniel. Your ‘willy’ is doomed to be small, or non existent like your intelligence or ability to be funny.

  • 39 Casey // May 16, 2011 at 3:19 am

ill have to say to each his own but isn’t this going little to far? i mean it is permanent and what if they change their mind later in life? but i think its cool just not as a permanent thing but thats just me

  • 40 Karen // Jun 24, 2011 at 11:28 pm

I was actually born with pointed ears. but, my Mother didn’t like them so she would spend every day of my growing years reshaping them by rubbing the ends with her fingers and stuffing cotton into the crease. There are people who are truly born with pointed ears AND even the eyebrows like Spock! I’m one of them.

  • 41 Elissa // Aug 23, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Just saying here… but if people are actually born with pointy ears why are people giving others greif about wanting them? Personally I think it’s something you do if you really feel like you should have been born with them. For example like people who get a sex change. Personally ever since I was very little I’ve wanted pointed ears (not because I thought of them as cute or anything) because I felt/feel like I was supposed to be born with them. The thing is though is I’m 16 so I don’t know exactly where my life is going to go yet so…. have to wait on the ears. Not to mention my parents would be highly against it.

  • 42 sandra1345 // Sep 10, 2011 at 6:18 pm

I always wanted to get rid from my pointed ear…..Now after reading this blog I am going to keep them pointed like that hahahahaha

  • 43 JJ // Oct 3, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Wow! I want this so bad! Pointed ears are something i’ve wanted 4 as long as i can remember! And now i can get them!!! YAY!!

  • 44 Jess // Nov 3, 2011 at 6:16 pm

I dearly want pointed ears. How much would this set me back?

  • 45 Allison // Nov 4, 2011 at 12:41 am

This is kind of funny because I have pointy ‘elf’ ears – obviously not like these ones as I was born with them but still. I always thought they were a goofy quirk and people think they’re super cute so I guess this surgery proves it.

  • 46 L // Jan 16, 2012 at 9:51 pm

I like the look of these ears, but does anyone know if it’s possible to actually get your ears extended so they’re pointed AND a little long?

  • 47 Amanda Jo // Mar 6, 2012 at 10:50 am

I was born with small but very pointed ears not huge like a vulcan or a LOTR elf and I’ve never met anyone else born with them. It’s nice to know that some people think its cool. Because as a kid it was not cool I got made fun of and bullied all the time. As an adult I guess we don’t really notice peoples ears unless there huge because most people don’t notice mine and plus I wear my hair down alot out my childhood habit of covering them. However when someone does notice its a big deal and it kinda becomes all they see for a while.
