Had my left nipple for almost 4 years now, hurt LIKE HELL getting pierced, but beyond the first month or so has been a dream... it healed with alot less complications than for example my nose piercing. Only problems are the dreaded 'crusties', which are easy enough to clean off (once a week is fine), and around my period it used to get very sore in the first year, but now makes zero difference. I would 100% go for it if you're in two minds, just make sure you get a decent piercer/ properly fitting jewellery and very little can go wrong!
@Sarah, possibly the bump is a granuloma? Though I think they usually show up earlier than 12 months.

Hi, I've had my left nipple pierced for about 9 years now. Originally I had a 14 gauge, and it too at least a year to heal from memory. After that it only got happier with time, to the point that it could withstand being twisted, pinched. pulled etc. without any paid or bother. I stretched it out with a 12 gauge several years ago, and after a few months of increased sensitivity, it went back to the same as with the 14 gauge. Everything was fine until around 6 months ago. I may have caught it on a door or something, but nothing that was too serious (no blood or anything). Now, the left side bothers me a little, and it hurts to remove/insert the piercing. I've been washing it with salt water fairly consistently, with mixed results. Some weeks it seems better, others not. There is no pus, or clear signs of infection, other than a small smell on my fingers after washing it. Just wondering what your thoughts are and if you'd heard of anything like this before- particularly after so long. I have really small nipples naturally, so after the piercing, my left nipple enlarged quite a bit. Especially after stretching it. I don't think its too far back, but it definitely was pierced slightly behind the part which would be fully erect if it were cold, etc. Any ideas/help is much apprieciated!

SARAH- Have you been back to the piercer and had them look at it? And have you been cleaning it as they told you? In the yr and a half I had my piercings i never had any bleeding or tenderness other then the first day or 2 afterwards. The bump could be a keloid. I had one of those on my belly button and nose when i had those pierced but not my nipple. If thats what it is it will go away if you keep cleaning with plain liquid dial soap (the orange kind). sea salt soaks will help make it go away quicker too. I would definately go back to where u had it done though because they would know best. If there is an odor that is a definate sign of infection. Everybody is different. I had no bleeding or pain the whole year and a half i had mine and they rejected after all that time, they take a long time to heal since they heal from the inside out. All i can give you is my experience with the peircings i have, but i would go back to where you had it done because knowing about all of that stuff is their job.

MIKEY- i had mine peierced for a yr and a half before i had to take them out because they started to reject and u cant even tell there was anything there to being with. If you pull or look really closely all you can see is a pin prick which no one would even notice, you would never know that there was ever a bar in there. I don't know if you have it for many years if it would take longer to close? I wish i knew cuz i never even wanted to let mine close but once it rejects you have no choice.

I got my nipples pierced in April 2009. I remember the day I got them done like it was yesterday. It still makes me cringe if I think too much about it. Every time i think they will no longer give me trouble, one (or both) will crust and puss a little. Do I need to wash my bras more often or does everyone have this problem? Also, my right nipple piercing is deeper than the other (but not too deep), and when ever it gets infected, a small part of my nipple gets red, almost like theres blood under the surface of my skin (similar but less severe than a blood blister). It comes and goes. Temperature change, or cloths rubbing against it is like nails on a chalk board. I use to have little to no feeling in my nipples so I decided to get them pierced; however, now they are too sensitive. I love them and I don't want to take them out but will they ever become tolerable for others to touch? Is it because I baby them? Should I treat them like any other piercing to get them use to being played with? Heeeeelllp.
If you cant figure out the problem with out seeing them, I can send a picture via e-mail.

I pierced my own nipple like 5-6 years ago. I eventually gave up on it because it developed a minor infection. Within days the infection was gone but even today it has not healed over. It feels fine, there is no pain, just the hole and what developed of the "internal tube" that grew is still there. Will this ever completely heal over or is this permanent?

hey, i was really surprized about your accout of the piercing, i've had my nipple pierced for two weeks and it literally only hurt the day it got pierced. and that was only when i knocked it. I remember the clamp and the piercing itself hurting but only to the degree where i wriggled in my seat a little bit. it doesn't hurt at all anymore, no redness or swelling, i think i've been really lucky. i'm just quite scared about migration or rejection, what are the warning signs i can look out for?
