Tattoo And Body Piercing Parlors Soon Could Be Regulated

OLYMPIA, WA — The Washington state Legislature has passed a measure that requires body piercers and tattooers to be licensed by the state.
The Senate, on a 45-2 vote Wednesday, concurred with changes made in the House. The bill now goes to Gov. Chris Gregoire.
Body art, body piercing, and tattooing are not currently regulated in Washington State. Under the bill that lawmakers passed Wednesday, people who pierce or tattoo would need a license, as well as businesses that offer the services.
The measure also requires the state Health Department to adopt rules about the sterilization of needles and other instruments and jewelry used in body piercing or body art.
