Beginning in the mid to late 90′s a new trend in tattoos started to emerge. These were generally somewhat large sprawling tattoos across the lower back of women. Enter the “tramp stamp”. Popularity of this tattoo trend has continued to grow throughout the years and even more slang words for this tattoo style emerged such as; California Liscence Plates, Arse Antlers, and even Slag Tags.
As you can probably attain from the names for this tattoo that there is a great deal of sexual inuendo that a tramp stamp. Popular culture has taken this tattoo fad and pasted its own spin like in the movie Wedding Crashers ; ““See that tattoo on the lower back? It might as well be a bull’s eye.”
There may be some more factors behind this tattoo trend as lower back tattoos are usually designed to accent the natural figure of a woman and is less seceptable to stretching if a person goes through various weight changes.
Is the tramp stamp dead? Certainly not, but it could be a fading trend as tattoo removal clinics across the country have ever increasing appointments for tramp stamp removal.
The same care and consiteration should be taken in the decision to get a tramp stamp as any other tattoo. Remember.. your new tattoo will be there forever, so choose wisely.

i have a tattoo on my lower back, i’ve been in commited relationships since i was 17, i am a university student; and ive never been a tramp. tattoos are art- i put it there because i find it feminine, and i have the liberty of covering it up whenever i want to. i agree that there are tramps out there, and some might have lower back tattoos, but the assumtion that one causes the other or vise versa is ridiculous. its like saying black people are criminals because theyre black- your an idiot.

I didn’t say everyone with a lower back tattoo is a tramp. But popular culture has tagged such tattoos as a “Tramp Stamp”.

I have a lower back tattoo of a cross and i think its ridiculous that they’re considered tramp stamps. Its a good place for a girl to get one where u can still hide it. Ive been wit the same guy for 6 years and the tattoo is just self expression, no underlying meaning of being a tramp

I can understand why people call lower back tattoos ‘Tramp Stamps’ etc. Due to the fact that so many ‘tramps’ do get them. But what I don’t understand is that every other nice girl who has one is labeled as a tramp, you shouldn’t be labeled as something because you have a tattoo somewhere. I have one, and it’s actually quite pretty, and I have been married for 10 years now. So, I’m a tramp? No.

Whether you are a tramp or not is not in question. Having a tattoo on this part of your body IS now called a tramp stamp and has negative connotation. If you have a tattoo on this part of your body then you will need to deal with the negative and stereotypical backlash.

im a United States Soldier and a Tattoo Artist on the side and i have a life’s motto that everyone needs to think about it goes like this “TO EACH THERE OWN” and what it means is everyone is different, has different taste and different thoughts, so why doesnt everyone just learn to be themselfs. Last time I checked, people got tattoos for themselves, not for anyone else, so really, does it matter what anyone else thinks of them. And secondly, what is a “tramp”? Is it someone who sleeps around, shows of their body, is proud of their body and sexuality? If so, GOOD ON THEM. If you are demure, stay with the same partner for a long time, and don;t flaunt your body – GOOD ON YOU TOO.
