I am planning on a apprenticeship soon. The details are not important but,I want to know about how big should my portfolio be. should I include older peices that are not particularly good but show how much I've improved if I was proud of doing the drawing at the time I did it? Should I include things like tribals and boring stuff just to show I can do them?

a portfolio should best include old and new works to show your progress. its up to if u insist that all your work be in. if u need to subtract pieces due to how old they look or how maybe unfinished or trial they might be, it's really up to you. keep the portfolio in order and content organized eg black and white to color, don't have them mixed up, have a title section of each category wether it be bio, black and white, newschool, or clowns.  a good portfolio should be some thing that takes the viewer a long time to go through to notice the amount of work, so a few is bad a lot is great, it will prove your creativity and dedication to any shop. i can make it short and sweet everything you do to completion and what u really think is amazing put it in. they wont deny you for having to much, u might want to include a sketch book that contains sketches of your process. Sign and date each finished drawing. include photos of tattoos that might be even done as tattoos on people. if its a new year separate the years u complete the drawings 2009, 2010, 2011..

title on front of portfolio and your name
table of contents
bio pg1 - 4
black and white pgs 5 - 6 .....

sorry if this to much

I would think you would want to include only your best work. I think of it like any other art portfolio. Why would anyone care what you COULD do. They only care about what you CAN do.

If you want to show your progression, maybe include just a few. But the majority of your portfolio should be centered around what you can do today and try to vary it up and show how you can handle a variety of different styles, colors, etc.
